About Southwick Hall

Southwick Hall stands in the village of Southwick, three miles north of Oundle in Northamptonshire.

The house has been occupied for more than six hundred years and carries a Grade I listing, placing it among England's most significant historic buildings.

Ownership has passed through the Knyvett, Lynn and Capron families across the centuries.

The Hall is a Historic Houses member property, and groups can arrange visits by phone or email.

History of Southwick Hall

The Knyvett family built the medieval manor house, then known as Knyvett's Place, and held it from about 1300 to 1441. The Lynn family owned it from 1441 to 1840 and rebuilt the hall and cross-wing, with datestones of 1571 and 1580. The Caprons have owned it since 1840. Grade I listing, first granted in 1967, places the building among roughly 2.5% of listed structures in England judged of exceptional national interest.

Architecture of Southwick Hall

The house includes work from the 14th, 16th, 18th and 19th centuries and retains much of its medieval layout. It is built of squared coursed limestone and ashlar with Colleyweston slate roofs, and the Lynn family rebuilt the south front on the foundations of the medieval Great Hall.

Worth knowing

The Capron family later built the stable block in 1870 and, in 1909, created a more impressive entrance through the undercroft.
