Horace Walpole built Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham, Greater London, between 1749 and 1776, transforming a modest cottage into one of the most influential Gothic Revival buildings in England.
The house gave its name to the Strawberry Hill Gothic style, whose definition has long been disputed.
It is primarily credited with prefiguring and influencing the nineteenth-century Gothic Revival rather than spreading widely through the arts in the eighteenth century alone.
After decades of decline, a major restoration programme completed in 2010 returned the interiors to something close to Walpole's original vision.
The house is independently managed and open to the public.
