Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant, in the Wybrnant valley near Penmachno in Conwy, Wales, is the birthplace of Bishop William Morgan.

Morgan produced the first complete translation of the Bible into Welsh, published in 1588, and that work is widely credited with securing the survival of the Welsh language by giving it a literary and liturgical standard.

The farmhouse is small and unassuming, which makes the scale of what it represents all the more striking.

The National Trust manages the property and opens it to visitors.

History

William Morgan was born here in the mid-sixteenth century and went on to complete the first full translation of the Bible into Welsh, published in 1588. That translation is widely credited with securing the survival of the Welsh language by giving it a literary and liturgical standard. The farmhouse passed out of private hands and was eventually acquired by the National Trust, which restored it.

Architecture

Tŷ Mawr is a modest traditional Welsh stone farmhouse, small in scale and characteristic of the upland Conwy valley's vernacular building traditions.

Worth knowing

The 1588 Welsh Bible that Morgan translated is considered one of the most consequential books in Welsh cultural history. A copy is kept at the house.
