The Weir Garden

History

The garden was created by its former owner Roger Parr, working with his head gardener William Boulter, who transformed the riverside slope into a planted garden. Long before that, the site held a Roman temple, possibly linked to a high-status villa and the nearby Roman town of Magnis. The National Trust now cares for the property.

Architecture

Within the garden stand the ruins of a Roman temple, including an octagonal cistern fed by a spring and a ruined buttress above the river. These are recorded as the highest standing Roman ruins in Herefordshire.

Gardens & grounds

The garden's south-facing riverside position supports a wide range of plantings and draws notable wildlife, including kingfishers, goosanders and the rare club-tailed dragonfly.
