History of Tregrehan

In the Middle Ages the site belonged to the Bodrugan family before passing to the Carlyons, who have held it since 1565, making it one of Cornwall's longer-running single-family estates. The present house was designed by the architect George Wightwick in the Late Georgian period. Planting in the garden has continued under successive generations of the family for more than three centuries, with the spring garden undergoing restoration from 1989.

Architecture of Tregrehan

The house is built in granite in the Late Georgian style, with an Ionic colonnade noted by the architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner. It was designed by George Wightwick, who also provided the estate's lodge.

Gardens & grounds at Tregrehan

The 20-acre woodland garden is Grade II* listed and recognised as one of the Great Gardens of Cornwall, shaped by continuous Carlyon family planting since the 1700s.
