Treowen is a Grade I listed historic house in Monmouthshire, and a member of Historic Houses. Read about its history, architecture and gardens, plus how to visit and what's nearby.
About Treowen
Treowen is a Grade I listed Jacobean house near Monmouth, built in the early 17th century on a double-pile plan over four storeys.
It is regarded as the most important gentry house of its date in Monmouthshire.
The building served as a working farmhouse for several centuries, which meant it was never modernised and survives largely as built.
Historic Houses covers the property, and visitors can see its celebrated open well staircase on a guided tour led by the owner.

The house stands in the parish of Wonastow, close to Dingestow and about three miles from Monmouth, and was singled out by the 18th-century antiquarian Charles Heath as a 'noble mansion' in his writings on the county. Its long spell as a working farm, rather than a fashionable family seat, is what left its Jacobean fabric untouched. The property is now listed Grade I, and its grounds carry a separate Grade II designation on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales.
Architecture of Treowen
Treowen is built on a double-pile plan rising four storeys, an advanced layout for a rural gentry house of its date. Its best-known internal feature is a fine open well staircase, original to the early 17th-century build.
Worth knowing
The house now hosts the annual Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival and operates as a venue for conferences and functions, a modern use that sits alongside its centuries as a farm.
Gardens & grounds at Treowen
The grounds include formal gardens and private woodland walks along a half-mile drive, registered Grade II for their historic interest.
