Waddesdon Manor

History

The house passed down through three generations of the Rothschild family after Ferdinand's death in 1898, with each generation adding to its collections of art and antiquities. James de Rothschild bequeathed the house and its contents to the National Trust in 1957, along with an endowment for its upkeep. The Rothschild Foundation, currently chaired by Dame Hannah Rothschild, continues to oversee the property—an unusual arrangement for a National Trust site.

Architecture

The Grade I listed house was built in a mostly Neo-Renaissance style, deliberately echoing details from several French Renaissance chateaux rather than following any single model. The design process drew on expertise in both architectural detail and landscape design, resulting in an authenticity of approach rare among Victorian country houses attempting the style.

Worth knowing

Waddesdon holds one of the world's most valuable collections of decorative arts, assembled across three generations of the Rothschild family. It remains one of the National Trust's most visited properties, drawing over 463,000 visitors in 2019 alone.

Gardens & grounds

The grounds include Victorian parterres, a rococo-style aviary, and extensive wine cellars, all part of the wider estate landscape created alongside the house.
