The house stands in a 150-acre park on a 500-acre private estate in the Bure Valley, between Holt and Aylsham in Norfolk.

It remains a private home today, with Historic Houses supporting its tours and other visits.

History of Wolterton Hall

Horatio Walpole commissioned the hall from Thomas Ripley, and construction was completed in 1742. This was the same period his brother Sir Robert Walpole was raising Houghton Hall nearby. The two projects made Wolterton one of the four great power houses built by Norfolk's landed elite in that era. The estate has passed through generations since and is now privately owned, with the family continuing a programme of restoration.

Architecture of Wolterton Hall

The hall is a Palladian design by Thomas Ripley, built in brick with a formal, symmetrical front typical of early Georgian country houses commissioned by politically ambitious patrons.

Worth knowing

Horatio Walpole, who built the hall, was the brother of Sir Robert Walpole, generally regarded as Britain's first Prime Minister.

Gardens & grounds at Wolterton Hall
