About this place

The Great Hall at Adlington Hall rests on two oak trees felled centuries ago and left standing where they grew, cut down to roof height to serve as the main posts.

Adlington Hall is a historic house near Macclesfield in Cheshire, built up in stages from the medieval period through to the Georgian era.

The Legh family has held the estate since the fourteenth century, and the building mixes black-and-white timber framing with a brick Georgian front added later.

It is a Grade I listed building and opens to visitors for tours and events.

History

The Legh family acquired Adlington in the fourteenth century, traditionally dated to 1315, and the estate has stayed in the same family ever since. The medieval timber-framed great hall dates from around 1505. A classical brick wing was added in the 1740s, giving the house its two contrasting fronts.

Architecture

The house pairs a black-and-white timber-framed medieval great hall with a Georgian brick range added in the 1740s, giving it two quite different faces. The layout reflects centuries of piecemeal building rather than a single unified design.

Worth knowing

An 18th-century organ is housed in the hall and Handel is said to have played it during a visit to the house.

Gardens & grounds

The grounds include formal gardens and landscaping from the eighteenth century.
