About Aldborough Roman Town
Aldborough Roman Town stands on the edge of the village of Aldborough, near Boroughbridge in North Yorkshire.
It was the civitas capital of the Brigantes, the tribe who controlled much of northern Britain before the Roman conquest.
Two Roman mosaic pavements survive in situ on the site, along with stretches of the old town wall.
English Heritage manages the site and runs a small on-site museum holding finds from past excavations.
History of Aldborough Roman Town
The town developed into Isurium Brigantum, the administrative capital of the Brigantes tribe, following the Roman conquest of northern Britain in the first century AD. The site has attracted antiquarian interest for centuries, with excavations uncovering mosaics, walls and other remains that revealed the scale of the Roman settlement beneath the modern village.
Architecture of Aldborough Roman Town
What survives above ground includes sections of the town's defensive wall and two Roman mosaic floors left in their original positions, rather than lifted and displayed elsewhere.
Worth knowing
Aldborough is one of the few Roman civitas capitals in Britain where visitors can see mosaic pavements still lying where Roman workers first laid them.
