Althorp is a Grade I listed stately home in Northamptonshire, set within an estate of around 13,000 acres.

The Spencer family has owned it since 1508, making it one of England's longest continuously held family estates.

It is best known as the childhood home and burial place of Diana, Princess of Wales.

The current owner, Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer, opens parts of the house and grounds to visitors during the summer season.

History

John Spencer purchased the Althorp estate in 1508 using money from the family's sheep-rearing business. The land had been recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. The present house largely dates from a 1688 rebuilding. In the 18th century, the estate became a significant social hub for Britain's ruling class.
