Benington Lordship is a private garden estate in the village of Benington, Hertfordshire, built around the earthworks of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle.

That layered quality sets it apart from most garden estates: the castle earthworks have been incorporated as natural terracing within the planted landscape, giving the gardens an unusual structure and sense of depth.

A neo-Norman folly gatehouse, built in the 1830s, adds a further layer of character alongside the manor house.

History

The site has Norman origins, with earthworks from a motte-and-bailey castle surviving in the grounds, including the ruined foundations of a keep. A manor house was later built on the same land, and the estate has remained in private hands through successive centuries. In the 1830s a neo-Norman folly gatehouse was added to the grounds, constructed by James Pulham for George Proctor, which now stands alongside the Victorian manor house as one of the more striking features of the site.
