Benington Lordship

History

The site has Norman origins, with earthworks from a motte-and-bailey castle surviving in the grounds, including the ruined foundations of a keep. A manor house was later built on the same land, and the estate has remained in private hands through successive centuries. In the 1830s a neo-Norman folly gatehouse was added to the grounds, constructed by James Pulham for George Proctor, which now stands alongside the Victorian manor house as one of the more striking features of the site. The wider ownership history is not fully documented in available sources.

The site opens seasonally for snowdrops, spring bank holidays, and selected summer dates.
