About this place
Brancepeth Castle stands in County Durham, five miles south-west of Durham city, and has been the Dobson family's home for decades.
It began life as a Saxon stronghold before becoming the seat of the Neville family, and the building is now Grade I listed.
Visitors can join tours that trace its history from fortress to family home, and a handful of rooms open free of charge on certain mornings each year.
The castle also hosts weddings and a craft fair.
There is also a small café serving homemade German cakes.

The castle's origins go back to a Saxon stronghold, later rebuilt as the seat of the powerful Neville family, one of the great noble dynasties of medieval northern England. Over the centuries it has served several other purposes, including spells as a laboratory and a barracks. The Dobson family later moved in from London, and have run the castle ever since.
Architecture
The castle is Grade I listed, reflecting its medieval origins and the significant remodelling it has undergone over the centuries.
Worth knowing
In 2025 the castle featured in the television series Saving Country Houses with Penelope Keith, with the film crew producing a virtual tour of the house. The estate's former deer park is now Brancepeth Castle Golf Club, laid out by the golf course architect Harry Colt in 1925.
