About this place
Built largely in the fourteenth century, Raby Castle is one of the most complete medieval fortresses in England, standing in County Durham.
The Neville family raised it on an earlier site, and it passed to the Vane family in the seventeenth century, who have held it ever since.
The great kitchen dates to the 1360s and remained in daily use until 1954, making it among the most remarkable medieval domestic interiors surviving anywhere in the country, though it has seen some alterations over the centuries.
The castle is independently managed.
