The manor at Braxted was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 under Eudo Dapifer, and by 1342 it had been designated a deer park. Thomas Darcy bought the estate in 1650 from the estate of the Countess of Pembroke, and his son built Braxted Lodge here in 1680, adding the man-made lakes. The Du Cane family, wealthy cloth merchants of Huguenot descent, purchased the estate in 1745 and settled at Braxted Park from 1751.
Architecture
The house stands in the Queen Anne style, dating from a rebuilding in 1680, with later restoration work. The landscaped grounds, including the large lake seen from the house, were laid out under Thomas Darcy's family in the late 17th century.
Worth knowing
All Saints' Church, built around 1115 and restored in the 18th century, stands within the park grounds and predates the present house by more than five centuries.
