About this place
Layer Marney Tower holds the distinction of being the tallest Tudor gatehouse in Britain.
Built in the early sixteenth century, the red-brick structure stands in rural Essex, roughly six to seven miles south-west of Colchester.
Henry, first Lord Marney, commissioned it, though he died in 1523 before the grander house he had planned was ever completed.
The tower remains in private ownership and is a member of Historic Houses, whose members benefit from free admission.
It is open to the public on a seasonal basis, independent of the National Trust or English Heritage.
