About Bruisyard Hall
Bruisyard Hall stands on the site of an abbey built for the Poor Clares, a community of Franciscan nuns, until the Reformation ended their tenure.
The present house, a manor near the River Alde in Suffolk, was raised in Elizabethan style once the priory was suppressed.
Poor Clares houses were uncommon in England, making Bruisyard one of the few sites in the country with a direct link to the order.
The Hall remains in private hands and is not part of a national heritage scheme, so it is not routinely open to visitors.
History of Bruisyard Hall
The village of Bruisyard appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 under the name Buresiart, from the Anglo-Saxon gebures geard, meaning a peasant's yard or enclosure. Before the Reformation the site of the Hall held an abbey of the Order of the Poor Clares, and the present manor house was built after the religious community was dissolved. St Peter's Church nearby, with its round tower thought to date from Saxon times, is Grade I listed and forms part of the same small settlement.
Architecture of Bruisyard Hall
The current Hall was built as an Elizabethan manor house after the Dissolution, replacing the earlier priory buildings that had stood on the same ground.
