About Dinefwr Castle Museum
Dinefwr Castle stands on a wooded hill above the River Tywi near Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire.
The ruined castle dates from the 12th century and was built as the seat of the Welsh kingdom of Deheubarth.
It sits within the wider Dinefwr estate, now cared for by the National Trust.
The climb to the tower gives one of the best views in the Tywi valley, over parkland grazed by White Park cattle said to descend from an ancient herd.

Dinefwr is traditionally associated with Rhys ap Gruffydd, known as the Lord Rhys, who ruled Deheubarth in the 12th century and is said to have strengthened an earlier stronghold on the site. The castle passed through Welsh and later English hands over the following centuries as the fortunes of the Dinefwr lordship changed. The surrounding estate eventually came to the National Trust.
Architecture of Dinefwr Castle Museum
The remaining structure is a stone keep and curtain wall typical of native Welsh castle building, with later medieval additions layered onto the earlier fortification.
Worth knowing
The White Park cattle herd within the estate is said to have grazed the land for centuries, giving Dinefwr a continuity of use that is unusual among Welsh castle sites.
Gardens & grounds at Dinefwr Castle Museum
The castle grounds form part of the wider Dinefwr parkland, with veteran oaks and open deer park walks leading up to the ruins.
