About Dolaucothi Gold Mines

Dolaucothi Gold Mines lie in the Cothi Valley near Pumsaint in Carmarthenshire.

The Romans worked the site from around AD 75, using aqueducts and water power to mine gold on an industrial scale.

It is thought to be the only place in Britain where the Romans mined gold industrially.

Mining continued intermittently until the 1930s.

The National Trust has cared for the mines since 1941.

Visitors can walk the surface workings and access underground tunnels cut by miners from three different periods.

History of Dolaucothi Gold Mines

The Romans are thought to have begun mining gold at Dolaucothi around AD 75, building leats and reservoirs to bring water from miles away for hydraulic prospecting and for powering machinery underground. Mining resumed in phases long after the Romans left, with activity recorded in the early twentieth century and again in the 1930s before the workings closed. The wider Dolaucothi Estate, including a manor house rebuilt by the Johnes family, passed through private hands until the National Trust took on the mines and surrounding land in 1941.

Architecture of Dolaucothi Gold Mines

The site is defined by its opencast pits and underground galleries rather than any single building, with surviving traces of Roman water-management engineering including leats and settling tanks cut into the valley side.

Worth knowing

Dolaucothi is the only confirmed Roman gold mine in Britain, making it a rare physical record of Roman mineral engineering rather than a later industrial reworking of an unknown ancient source.
