About this place
Founded around 1195, Egglestone Abbey is a ruined Premonstratensian monastery set above the River Tees in County Durham.
It was a small and consistently poor house, never growing to the scale of wealthier abbeys nearby.
The ruins include substantial remains of the church and the east range, though little else survives above ground, giving a partial but legible sense of the original plan.
English Heritage cares for the site, and admission is free.
