About this place

Fulbeck Manor stands in the Lincolnshire village of Fulbeck, a few miles north of Grantham.

The core of the house dates from the seventeenth century, built of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, and later owners added Georgian and Victorian extensions.

Its walls carry around 400 years of family portraits, a rare unbroken visual record for a house this size.

It belongs to the Historic Houses network, though entry is not free even for members.

History

Local tradition holds that the present building may have started as a barn conversion around 1580 before being developed into a full house through the seventeenth century. Successive generations added Georgian and then Victorian work, layering the building's appearance over some 250 years. The long run of family portraits inside points to a single family's occupation stretching back generations.

Architecture

The house is built of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, a seventeenth-century core overlaid with Georgian and Victorian alterations and additions.

Worth knowing

Local tradition holds that the manor began life as a converted barn around 1580 rather than as a purpose-built house, which would make its later grandeur something of an architectural disguise.
