About this place
Glynde Place stands at the top of the village of Glynde in East Sussex, built in 1569 by William and Anne Morley from local flint, chalk and Caen stone.
It looks out over the Weald and the Sussex Downs from within the South Downs National Park.
The house remains a family home today, occupied by Francis and Caroline Hampden and their children.
Historic Houses members can visit for free on the guided tours that run through the summer months.

The house passed from the Morleys through the Trevors and the Brands before descending to the Viscounts Hampden, whose descendants still live there. One of its most notable owners was Colonel Herbert Morley, a leading Parliamentarian during the English Civil War. Between 2008 and 2013 the 7th Viscount Hampden organised a major renovation of the house, funded by the sale of one of the estate's paintings.
Architecture
Built in 1568–9 in flint, chalk and Caen stone, Glynde Place is a Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, with much of the guided tour taking place on the first floor.
Worth knowing
Colonel Herbert Morley, one of the house's early owners, was a prominent Parliamentarian figure during the Civil War period.
