About this place
Great Fulford is a Grade I listed manor house in the parish of Dunsford, Devon, about nine miles west of Exeter.
The Fulford family has lived here since the reign of Richard I, making it one of the longest continuously held family homes in England.
The current house is largely Tudor, with later refurbishment and remodelling layered over medieval origins still visible under the plaster.
It is not run by a national heritage body and opens by appointment for tours, weddings and corporate events.
History
The Fulford family has held the estate since the reign of King Richard I, between 1189 and 1199, giving it over 800 years of unbroken family ownership. The prefix 'Great' was added in the late 17th century to distinguish the house from Little Fulford in Shobrooke, a property briefly held by Colonel Francis Fulford through marriage to the Tuckfield heiress. By 2004 the estate covered around 3,000 acres.
Architecture
The present house is Tudor in origin, dating from the 16th century, with refurbishment in the late 17th century and further remodelling around 1800. It is listed Grade I, and the family says medieval fabric survives beneath later panelling and plasterwork.
Worth knowing
Great Fulford has been used as a location for films and photography. The house features in written family records from the early 19th century.
