About Castle Drogo
Castle Drogo stands above the Teign Gorge near Drewsteignton in Devon, the last castle ever built in England.
Julius Drewe, who made his fortune from the Home and Colonial Stores, commissioned it in 1911, convinced he was descended from a medieval baron named Drogo de Teigne.
Edwin Lutyens designed the granite building, completed in 1930 just a year before Drewe's death.
The National Trust has cared for it since 1974.

Julius Drewe, founder of the Home and Colonial Stores grocery chain, bought the Drewsteignton estate believing it had belonged to his supposed ancestor Drogo de Teigne, and work on his granite castle began in 1911. Construction dragged on through the First World War and was not finished until 1930, by which point Drewe's original, much larger design had been scaled back. The National Trust took the house on in 1974.
Architecture of Castle Drogo
Lutyens designed Castle Drogo in a mixed-revivalist style, combining castellated granite walls with the clean lines and careful proportion that marked his mature work. It is Grade I listed.
Worth knowing
The architect Edwin Lutyens, one of the most celebrated of his era, was commissioned to design the castle.
Gardens & grounds at Castle Drogo
The grounds include a formal garden with long herbaceous borders, laid out while the castle itself was still under construction.
