About this place

Greywalls Hotel in Gullane, East Lothian, was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1901 for politician and cricketer Alfred Lyttelton as a summer retreat overlooking Muirfield Golf Course.

The house exemplifies Lutyens's Arts and Crafts style, with its distinctive crescent-shaped plan built in local sandstone and steep roofs.

It has operated as a hotel since 1948 and holds Category A listed status, Scotland's highest grade of architectural protection.

Six acres of walled garden, traditionally designed by Gertrude Jekyll, surround the building and are included on Scotland's Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes.

History

The house was built in 1901 for the politician and cricketer Alfred Lyttelton, who commissioned Lutyens to design a summer retreat close to the Muirfield links. It remained in private hands for several decades before opening as a hotel in 1948. The gardens surrounding the house are included on the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland, the national record of the country's most significant designed landscapes.

Architecture

Lutyens gave the house a distinctive crescent-shaped plan, using local sandstone and steep roofs in a style typical of his Arts and Crafts period. The design is considered one of his more accomplished smaller country houses, built with an eye to the golf course it overlooks.

Worth knowing

The garden layout is traditionally attributed to Gertrude Jekyll, who frequently collaborated with Lutyens on his country house commissions.

Gardens & grounds

The six-acre walled garden is listed on Scotland's Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes and remains a key part of a visit, alongside the house itself.
