Harlaxton Manor

History

Gregory Gregory began building Harlaxton Manor in 1832, with the main structure topped out in 1836. Construction continued through the mid-1850s, finishing around 1854 or 1855. The work involved two of Victorian England's leading architects, Anthony Salvin and William Burn, with Edward Blore consulted during planning. The estate later became the British campus of the University of Evansville, which has run it as a study-abroad centre since 1971.

Architecture

The manor blends Jacobean and Elizabethan forms with Baroque decoration, a combination that makes it unique among England's Jacobethan houses. Salvin and Burn worked on the design in succession, with Blore consulted at an earlier stage of planning.

Worth knowing

The manor now functions as the British campus of the University of Evansville, an Indiana-based university, giving an American student body daily use of a Victorian Grade I listed house.

Gardens & grounds

The park and gardens surrounding the manor are listed Grade II* on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, a distinction that sits alongside the house's own Grade I status.
