About this place

Anne Boleyn spent her childhood at Hever Castle, a 13th-century moated fortification set in the Kentish countryside near Edenbridge.

The castle passed through several owners after the Boleyn family, including Henry VIII himself, before falling into disrepair.

William Waldorf Astor purchased it in 1903 and spent lavishly on its restoration.

He built a Tudor-style village across the moat to accommodate his family and guests, along with service accommodation.

The gardens he created, including an Italian garden containing Roman sculptures he had collected, are among the more distinctive features of any castle estate in England.
