About this place
Holker Hall has been home to the Cavendish family since 1756, and the same family still owns and runs the estate today.
The hall stands near Cark-in-Cartmel in Cumbria, in the southern part of the county.
A fire in 1871 destroyed the west wing, and the Victorian replacement that rose in its place gives the house much of its character now.
The gardens are particularly well regarded, covering around 23 acres with a cascade and a kitchen garden that remain in active use.
