About Hurst House
Hob Hurst's House, on Beeley Moor near Bakewell in Derbyshire, is a Bronze Age burial mound with an unusual rectangular shape.
Most barrows from this period are round.
The site was originally ringed by thirteen standing stones, of which five remain today.
English Heritage holds it in guardianship as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The Peak District Boundary Walk passes nearby on its way to Beeley village.

The barrow was excavated in 1853 by Thomas Bateman, a Derbyshire antiquarian known as the 'Barrow Knight' for his prolific work opening prehistoric mounds. The dig uncovered a stone-lined grave containing scorched human bone and lead ore. The site stands on Harland Edge, commanding views above Chatsworth House.
Architecture of Hurst House
The barrow measures approximately 10 metres across and 1.2 metres high, set within a ditch with an outer bank roughly 20 metres in diameter. Its rectangular plan is highly unusual—most Bronze Age barrows in the region are round.
