The core of Hutton John is a pele tower raised in the 14th century, probably by William de Hoton, built for defence in the lawless Anglo-Scottish borderlands.
The house stands near Penrith in Cumbria.
Ownership passed by marriage to the Hudleston family in the Tudor period, and the property is now owned by the Fraser family.
It is grade I listed for the survival of that medieval tower within later additions.

History
The pele tower dates from the 14th century and gave the Hutton family a fortified base on the border. Ownership passed by marriage to the Hudlestons in the Tudor period, and the family added to the house over the following centuries. Cuthbert Hutton made the first Tudor addition, a north wing followed in the 17th century, and later generations, remembered as Andrew the Counsellor and Laura Henrietta, gave the house its Georgian and Victorian character. The property later passed to the Fraser family through marriage.
Architecture
The house grew around its medieval pele tower in stages: a Tudor addition by Cuthbert Hutton, a 17th-century north wing, Georgian remodelling by Andrew the Counsellor, and Victorian changes made by Laura Henrietta. It is listed grade I chiefly for the survival of the pele tower.
Gardens & grounds
The upper terrace holds eight yew trees now almost as tall as the house, alongside a small 17th-century dovecote.
