About this place

Levens Hall is an Elizabethan manor house near Kendal in Cumbria, built around a medieval pele tower dating to the 13th century.

The topiary garden was laid out in 1694, making it one of the oldest surviving formal gardens of its kind in the world.

The topiary shapes, some clipped to heights of several metres, have been maintained without interruption since the late seventeenth century.

The house has been in continuous family occupation for centuries and remains privately owned today.
