About this place
John Nash designed Longner Hall in 1803 in the Tudor Gothic style for the Burton family, who had held land at Longner since medieval times.
The house stands near Uffington, close to Shrewsbury in Shropshire, within a 170-acre park landscaped by Humphry Repton.
Its principal rooms retain plaster fan vaulting and stained glass from the period.
The Grade I listed building was later altered and extended by Edward Haycock in 1838.

The Burton family had owned land at Longner since medieval times before the present house was built in 1803, replacing an earlier structure on the site. In 1841 the estate passed to banker Robert Burton, head of Shrewsbury's Salop Bank and twice mayor of the town, who commissioned Shrewsbury architect Edward Haycock to alter and extend the house and outbuildings in 1838. Longner Hall is Grade I listed.
Architecture
The house is built of red sandstone ashlar to an irregular L-shaped plan, rising two storeys under a plain tile roof. Its principal rooms feature fan-vaulted plasterwork and stained glass. Edward Haycock made later alterations to the structure in 1838.
Worth knowing
A Grade II listed chest tomb in the grounds commemorates Edward Burton, who died in 1558 and was refused burial at St Chad's Church in Shrewsbury, an unusual footnote to the family's long tenure at Longner.

The 170-acre park was landscaped by Humphry Repton at the same time Nash built the house. Its layout continues to shape the setting today.
