About this place
Lydford Gorge in Devon carries the River Lyd through the deepest gorge in South West England.
The National Trust looks after the site, with waymarked paths leading past the Devil's Cauldron whirlpool and the White Lady Waterfall.
Oak woodland lines the gorge walls, and the paths can be steep and narrow in places.
It sits on the western edge of Dartmoor National Park, close to the village of Lydford.
History
The River Lyd has cut through the rock here over thousands of years, carving the steep-sided gorge visitors walk through today. The gorge lies within Dartmoor National Park. The National Trust now manages the site and its network of footpaths.
