About this place

Murthly Castle stands on the south bank of the River Tay in Perthshire, Scotland, on an estate long held by the Stewarts of Grandtully.

Two castles occupy the grounds: an older tower house dating from the 15th century and a Gothic Revival mansion built in the early 19th century.

The older castle carries a Category A heritage listing.

The mansion, designed by architect James Gillespie Graham, was never fully completed and was eventually demolished in 1949.

The estate remains in private ownership and is not generally open to visitors.

History

The Stewarts of Grandtully held the Murthly estate for generations. The older tower house dates from the 15th century. A new castle was commissioned in the early 19th century, with construction occurring between 1827 and the mid-1830s. The building was never fully completed and was not permanently occupied by the family. It was later demolished in 1949.

Architecture

The 19th-century castle is a Gothic Revival design, attributed to architect James Gillespie Graham, featuring turrets and towers typical of the style.
