About this place
Built in 1786 on the banks of the River Tay, Stanley Mills is one of the best-preserved cotton mill complexes in Scotland.
The site sits in the village of Stanley in Perth and Kinross.
Power came originally from waterwheels driven by the river, with the mill later transitioning through turbine and then electric power across its working life.
Historic Scotland purchased the site in 1995, and it has been under public heritage stewardship ever since, now cared for by Historic Environment Scotland.
Visitors can explore the industrial machinery and workers' history inside, getting a vivid sense of what large-scale cotton production looked like in rural Scotland.
