About this place
Penrhyn Castle is a vast neo-Norman mansion near Bangor in Gwynedd, Wales.
Construction began around 1820 and continued until 1837, though the precise start date is disputed across heritage sources.
The Pennant family funded the building through profits from Jamaican sugar plantations and the nearby Penrhyn slate quarry.
Inside, the scale is striking, with a grand staircase hall rising the full height of the building.
The National Trust has cared for the property since 1951.
