About Poulton Hall

Poulton Hall is a Grade II listed country house at Poulton Lancelyn, near Bebington on the Wirral, built in 1653.

The Lancelyn family has occupied the site since at least 1093, when documentary evidence places a fortified house there.

The pebbledashed brick hall, with stone dressings and a slate roof, sits among cobbled courtyards and a walled garden.

An 18th-century library remains largely untouched since it was fitted out.

The grounds include a 17th-century brewhouse, also Grade II listed, topped with a clock tower housing a 32-bell carillon.

Roger Lancelyn Green, a 20th-century resident and scholar, was a close friend of C.S.

Lewis and hosted literary visitors associated with the Inklings circle.

The house has appeared on screen in the television adaptation of Alan Garner's The Owl Service.

Historic Houses supports the property, and the walled gardens, which feature 20th-century sculpture, open to the public on select dates each year.

History of Poulton Hall

Documentary evidence places the Lancelyn family on this site as far back as 1093, when a fortified house, remembered locally as a castle, stood here. Its stones were reused in a later house of around 1350, whose cellars survive beneath the present hall built in 1653. Roger Lancelyn Green, a 20th-century resident and scholar, was a close friend of C.S. Lewis and brought literary visitors associated with the Inklings circle to the house.
