About this place

Sezincote is a country house in the Cotswolds that looks like no other in England.

Built in the early nineteenth century, it was commissioned by Sir Charles Cockerell, whose brother Colonel John Cockerell had originally purchased the estate after making his fortune with the East India Company.

Charles, who had also served with the Company in Bombay, engaged his brother Samuel Pepys Cockerell as architect and chose the Mughal style of India for the design.

The result is extraordinary: a curved copper-covered onion dome rises above an ornamental water garden, setting the house apart from every neighbouring Georgian manor.

The house remains in private ownership.

The garden is open from March to November, while the house itself opens for guided tours between May and September, on selected days each week.
