The estate has a long connection to religious scholarship. Lewis Way purchased Stansted in 1804 and attempted to establish a college for the conversion of Jews to Christianity on the land. The 9th Earl of Bessborough acquired Stansted and its parkland in 1924, bringing it into a family that remains in residence. The mansion's present Carolean revival interiors date from its Edwardian rebuilding.
Architecture of Stansted Park
The house is Grade II* listed and built in Carolean revival style dating from the Edwardian period. The surrounding parkland carries its own Grade II* landscape listing.
Worth knowing
The chapel on the estate has an east window that combines Christian and Jewish iconography. The window and chapel are said to have inspired the poet John Keats in his work.
