Stratfield Saye House in Hampshire was given to the Duke of Wellington by a grateful nation in 1817, following his victory at Waterloo.
The house itself dates from around 1630, though Wellington made considerable alterations to adapt it for comfortable living.
It remains in the ownership of the Wellington family, making it one of the longer-running examples of a house tied to a specific military honour.
The 1st Duke is buried in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral in London; most of his successors, however, are buried at Stratfield Saye itself.
