About Sufton Court

Sufton Court is a small Palladian mansion at Mordiford in Herefordshire, built in 1788 to a design by James Wyatt.

The house stands above the meeting point of the Wye and Lugg and remains in the family of James Hereford, who commissioned it.

Its park was laid out by Humphry Repton, and the original 'red book' he produced for the owners survives on site.

Historic Houses members can visit during the house's limited open periods each year.

History of Sufton Court

James Hereford built Sufton Court in the late 1780s as a compact family seat rather than a grand showpiece. The house has remained in Hereford family ownership ever since. It is listed Grade II*, a reflection of how complete and unaltered Wyatt's design and interiors remain.

Architecture of Sufton Court

The house is an early example of Georgian Palladian design, built and decorated throughout by James Wyatt. His finest interior, the original Music Room, now serves as the Drawing Room.

Worth knowing

James Wyatt, one of the busiest architects of Georgian Britain, designed both the house and its interiors, a rare case of his domestic work surviving largely intact in a smaller country house.

Gardens & grounds at Sufton Court

The parkland was laid out by Humphry Repton, and his original 'red book' of proposals for the estate still survives at the house, a detail few Repton landscapes can claim.
