About Winkworth Arboretum

Winkworth Arboretum covers 95 acres of hillside between Godalming and Hascombe in Surrey, planted to showcase autumn colour.

Dr Wilfrid Fox began clearing and planting the land in 1938, selecting species for their seasonal display as much as botanical interest.

The slopes descend to two landscaped lakes, with azaleas, rhododendrons and holly among more than a thousand tree species.

The National Trust has managed the site since 1952, and entry is free for members.

History of Winkworth Arboretum

Dr Wilfrid Fox started work on the site in 1938, clearing scrubland and planting it through the war years with trees and shrubs chosen to maximise autumn colour. He gave the arboretum to the National Trust in 1952. The two lakes on the lower slopes formed part of the scheme.

Worth knowing

The arboretum's design reflects one man's eye for autumn colour. Wilfrid Fox planted with the specific aim of maximising seasonal display rather than creating a conventional botanical collection.
