The house was designed around 1750 for John Lawrence. The Daniell family acquired Trelissick in the early nineteenth century, with Thomas Daniell remodelling the house in the 1820s. The estate later passed through the Gilbert and Copeland families. Ida Copeland, connected to the Spode pottery business through marriage, gave Trelissick to the National Trust in 1955.
Worth knowing
Ida Copeland, who gave the estate to the National Trust, had earlier served as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Stoke-on-Trent, a seat closely tied to her family's pottery interests.
