The Cornwall National Landscape was designated in 1959 and covers 370 square miles. It is the only National Landscape split into 12 separate sections, with a world-renowned coastline and many natural and heritage features.

14 National Trust places sit inside the Cornwall National Landscape boundary, from Sandymouth Beach in the north to Mullion Island in the south. Five of them are within four miles of a mainline railway station, and four have a café.

Around Trewellard

Levant Mine and Beam Engine: A Cornish Mining World Heritage Site on exposed cliffs, centred on a restored 1840s beam engine that runs on steam. Trengwainton Garden: Trengwainton Garden near Penzance, in National Trust care since 1961, is renowned for exotic planting and sea views over Mount's Bay. Visit info, map and nearby places. Lanyon Quoit (near Penzance) is a National Trust place too. The three are about 6 miles apart from first to last, so they fit into one day.

Around St Erth

Trencrom Hill: A 175-metre hill with far-reaching views, prehistoric archaeology and wildlife along the route to its summit. Penrose, Cornwall: Loe Pool is Cornwall's largest natural freshwater lake, set within the 1,536-acre Penrose estate near Helston, managed by the National Trust since 1974. Mullion Island: An uninhabited offshore island within a Site of Special Scientific Interest, where landing is prohibited because it supports breeding seabirds. The three are about 15 miles apart from first to last, so they fit into one day.

By train

Trencrom Hill is 1.5 miles from St Erth, St Anthony Head is 1.9 miles from Falmouth Docks and Trengwainton Garden is 1.9 miles from Penzance. Distances are in a straight line, so allow longer on foot or by taxi or bus.

Before you go

Wheal Coates has no visitor car park. Many places open fewer days or close for part of the winter, so check opening times before you travel.
