About Trewithen
Trewithen House is a Palladian country house completed in 1723 by London architect Thomas Edwards, standing near Probus on the road between Grampound and Truro in Cornwall.
The name derives from Cornish meaning 'house of the trees'.
The estate encompasses 30 acres of woodland gardens and over 200 acres of parkland, both Grade II* listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
The house itself is Grade I listed and remains a privately owned family home, open for guided tours alongside the gardens.
The collections are particularly noted for rare magnolias and camellias, some grown from seed collected during early twentieth-century plant-hunting expeditions.
Successive generations of the same family have developed and maintained both house and gardens throughout its history.

The house was built in 1723 to a design by London architect Thomas Edwards, making it one of Cornwall's earliest fully developed Palladian houses. It has remained a private family home throughout its history rather than passing to institutional ownership, and both house and gardens have been developed and maintained by successive generations of the same family. The house is listed Grade I on the National Heritage List for England.
